Various marine sports are popular on Lake Biwa, but the Asian Wakesurfing Championship, which involves riding on waves made by a boat, was held in Otsu City.
This tournament was invited and held by the Otsu Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of its tourism promotion project.
Wakesurfing is a sport in which you are pulled by a boat while on a surfboard, and when you reach a certain speed, you let go and ride the waves made by the boat, competing to see how many tricks you can perform within a set course.
Athletes aged 6 to 64 from Japan and seven Asian countries participated in the tournament, running over the waves on the lake.
Although wakesurfing involves being pulled by a boat, the speed is slower than other marine sports, meaning that it can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages.
The Otsu Chamber of Commerce and Industry plans to focus on promoting tourism in Shiga, with an eye towards hosting the world championships in the future.
